What Gets Scheduled, Gets Done!
Written by Sam Rathling on March. 1st 2017
"How do you do it all Sam?" this is the most common question I get asked on an almost daily basis! As a super busy Mum with 3 children all under the age of 10, and 2 international businesses, I answer with one simple response. "What gets scheduled, gets done!".

I schedule everything... And I mean EVERYTHING! My calendar runs in 15 min. blocks and there is something in it, every 15 mins, 24/7. I schedule, sleeping, shower time, getting dressed, personal development, exercise, visualisation... it's a schedule that is designed to keep me focused, hyper productive and still make sure that I meet all of the demands on me as a Mum, a Wife, a Supplier, a Client, a Leader, a Business owner, a Mentor to many, a Business Partner a Sister and a Daughter.

Here are my top tips to help you find more hours in the day than you ever thought possible... Take a blank calendar, I recommend Google Calendar so that you can colour code it and keep it on you everywhere you go. Now we are going to plan your new schedule from scratch...

TIP 1 - Put in the quality time with your family and significant other first. When you put this time in your schedule, you must make a commitment to yourself and them, that this is sacred, quality, engaged time with them. This must be a NO phone zone. My 7 year old Maya hides my phone in the house when its her Mummy time. I still have no idea where she puts it, but when its Mummy time I am all in.

Too many parents are supposedly spending time with their kids, when in fact they are not at all. Their child is craving time with them and yet they are glued to their smartphone with their child tugging at their sleeve saying Mummy, Mummy and the response, is a frustrated 'Just a minute!' or 'What?? What do you want?!!' as they scroll their newsfeed or try to respond to emails. Put the phone away and make this your most important appointment. The same goes for time with your significant other, no phone zone and engaged quality time.

TIP 2 - Schedule in your time for your health next, even if its just a walk, put in some time to be active. Without your health you have nothing. Plan in your gym time, or swimming, or walking or jogging, whatever you want. Just make sure its in the calendar. If its not scheduled, it won't happen! People are getting more busy, not less busy and you need to keep in peak condition if you are going to be in peak performance when it comes to your work or business.

TIP 3 - Next schedule in your time for learning, even if its just 30 mins a day, invest in your own personal development. Listen to an audiobook, watch a Youtube video, listen to a podcast, read a book... focus on keeping yourself in a positive mindset by learning something new and plugging in to success and positivity from mentors who can give you the growth you need to move to the next level. To be super productive, do this whilst doing something else eg. listen whilst driving, listen whilst preparing food, or whilst brushing your teeth.

TIP 4 - Schedule in the activities that you HAVE to do, such as your work, your job, your hours when you have to be somewhere and you don't have a choice in the matter (yet!). Its important to schedule in the time you will be there and any commuting or travel time to get there. This will usually be a large chunk of your schedule, and will usually have some kind of pattern to it. So that's an easy one to put on repeat in your calendar unless you work irregular shifts.

TIP 5 - Schedule in your chores, time you need to spend looking after the house or on errands such as grocery shopping etc. I highly recommend doing this online to save time and getting your business to a point as soon as possible where you can outsource your domestic chores, such as cleaning and ironing. It has to get scheduled otherwise it won't get done. Try where possible to keep this to the same day(s) each week so you can start to form some kind of a routine.

TIP 6 - Most people reading this probably have a spare time or part-time business or some other income stream alongside your core job or business. Most of the people I mentor, spend approximately 5-10 hours a week working a spare-time or part-time income that helps them to make an additional £500-£1500 a month, so finding time to fit this in around everything else is important. You may or may not have this, but you might have a hobby business or another way that you make money alongside your core income, just make sure you schedule that in.

TIP 7 - Sleep is important too! I only need around 5 hours a night, and I am a definite night owl, but if you are looking to find more hours in the day, cut down how many hours you sleep! Sounds simple, but just sleeping 30 mins less a day will give you an additional 182 hours a year or 24 extra days per annum! Could you get up 30 mins earlier? Or stay up 30 mins longer? What could you do with an extra 24 days a year in productivity?

TIP 8 - Go on a media fast! I have not watched TV for 7 years. I got this advice from a very close friend and business mentor and it changed my life. The average adult spends 3.5 hours a day on average watching TV, and that doesn't even account for time spent watching smartphones or iPads consuming Youtube or Netflix. Thats 1277.5 hours a year or 53 days!! I challenge you to remove the media from your life for 7 days, and I mean no radio, no TV no newspapers. It will change your life, you will be more positive, feel happier and you will suddenly have more time than you know what to do with!

I hope you picked up at least one tip that can help you be more productive and schedule more effectively. I have spent years mastering my schedule and its one of the first things I do with every one of my clients. It is my purpose and mission to impact the lives of 1 million people, so thank you for allowing me to share my thoughts with you here. I would love you to comment with the number one thing you took away from my article and click 'Like' and 'Share' if you feel others would benefit.
